On a daily basis, workers, students, elderly and other civilians are sitting comfortably in overcrowded wagons, tube trains and buses to travel from one urban place to another. My public transport photo project came to life inside a bus in Athens in July 2005. Using my personal mobile phone, I started looking at people’s bodily reactions while using diverse means of transport. Traveling allows enough time to explore and reveal any aspect of everyday life in the modern urban ecology of European cities: race, age, class, immigration, laziness, violent stops and alert positions, all have finally become part of this moving documentation. The hands act as the vital component of this never-ending travel that highlights a generic uncertainty, similar to hands’ plasticity that an experienced theatre director has to address in the actors’ movements. These unknown black-white faces that rarely reveal their personal identities, seriously speak through their motionless theatricality.
